"America’s Problem and Church’s Problem the Same"

"For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, dispisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away." (II Timothy 3:2-5).

Paul described to Timothy something that was present in his day, but would only increase and become more predominant as time went on. That is the breakdown of morality in the world. Mulitudes in America today are morally bankrupt. One congressman explained it this way concerning the debate over the Healthcare Bill. He said, "There ain't no rules here, we're trying to accomplish something. . . . All this talk about rules. . . . When the deal goes down . . . we make 'em up as we go along." Here was a Representative who had sworn to uphold, defend, and protect the Constitution of the United States, and he declares "There ain’t no rules here." What was even more amazing was that none of his fellows who voted with him publicly rebuked nor denied what this man said. The back room deals, the buying of votes, etc, was evidence that what this man said was true. Other "conservative" Democrats who were supposed to be pro-life and swore not to vote for the Bill because it provided for tax payer funded abortions ended up trading the precious lives of the unborn for the favor of politics. They professed to have convictions, but convictions not stood for are not convictions. They are only a convenience for those who profess to have them. Why is it that there are so many today who care more for the party they are affiliated with, than they do for welfare of the nation. They have lost their moral compass. They are becoming morally bankrupt. The favor of politics has become to them more important than upholding and defending the Constitution.

The descriptions Paul gave Timothy in our text is not of folks who claim no connection with God, but of those who "have a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof." These are religious folks. The moral decline is not just among the irreligious, but among those who profess to be Christians. That is why so many so-called churches today have forsaken their rule of faith, which is the Word of God, the Bible, which I believe to be the Authorized King James version. Many of these churches(?) have accepted abortion [the murdering of the unborn], receive practicing Sodomites as members into their congregations, and allow women to fill the pulpits etc. They have in essence made the commandment of God which they profess to live by of none effect, and have exalted their own traditions and doctrines above the Word of God. This is the same display of depravity as was seen in the House of Representatives, and for the same reason, which is moral bankruptcy.

I am glad to see some of the groups like the Tea Party movement and others, who are trying to make a positive change in America, but if this is all that we have to hope in, then America and the churches are lost.

The only hope for America is God. We need another great Holy Spirit filled and driven revival. The Tea Party movement is trying to make outward changes. What America needs is an inward change. To take care of the problem, you must go to the source of the problem, and that is the heart. The only One that can change the heart is God, and this change can only come through preaching the TRUE gospel of Jesus Christ, and it being empowered by God’s Holy Spirit. That is the only hope for America. Maybe we have forgotten the power of the gospel. Paul said, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth." I fear that we have also forgotten the necessity of testimony. Foreign missions is necessary. Preachers preaching is a necessity, but it is just as much a necessity that every member of the church have a testimony for Jesus Christ. I am concerned that those who are still contending for the truth have become cold and callous. We need to remember that the primary responsibility of the church is to preach the gospel. If America is to ever pull out of the pit of moral corruption she is sliding into, it must come through the gospel of Christ.

If God’s people are to ever have the influence we are supposed to have, then we must "humble ourselves, and pray, and seek God’s face, and turn from our wicked ways." Then I believe God will hear, forgive, and heal.
