SHOULD WE KEEP "CHRISTMAS"?
Gospel Tract Distributors
MOST Christians are well aware that Satan delights to assume a quasi Christian character to deceive if it were possible even the very elect. If he can do this on a large scale, he knows he stands a much better chance of ensnaring even the wary. It is very easy for even the watchful saint to accept the standards of the world where the interests of the latter happen to seize upon some Christian matter. This very misfortune has befallen the celebration of the Nativity of the Saviour.

Satan has built up one of the most successful universal frauds of all time round the simple story of the humble family of Nazareth. It is not that for two or three days in the year the Way attracts millions of adherents from the world in widespread acceptance of the "spirit of Christmas"; it is rather that the devil is very willing to allow his own to dabble in a little pseudo- Christianity because he well knows that not only will this blunt the edge of the worldling's conscience, but that the keenest spiritual perception of the saint may be dulled, and his attention withdrawn from Christ to the crib, the carol, the Christmas tree, and even the carousal. To be carnal minded is death.
The Harvester
There are seven reasons why I cannot take part in Christ-mass festivities:
1.) No authority for Christ-mass is found in the Scriptures, and not the remotest hint in history, sacred or profane, that the early church engaged in any such practice.
2.) It is of heathen origin, as can be learned by consulting any good encyclopedia.
3.) The Papacy and her daughters ecclesiastic are the most enthusiastic celebrators of Christ- mass, which is conclusive proof that the practice is not in accord with the mind of God. Had it been in accord with His mind He would not only have given instructions to that effect, but would have told us the proper day to thus celebrate the birth of His Son.
4.) Associating revelry, frivolity and mirth with the precious name of our Lord and Saviour is monstrous. The world in its revelry on this occasion seems to gloat over the awful crime it has committed against the Son of God.
It makes merchandise of sacred things. For the world's merchants and manufacturers it is the biggest money-making time of the year. No wonder the merchants will all weep when God destroys the Romish system that has spawned this thing. - "And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more" (Revelation 18:11).
6.) Drunkenness, frivolity and license for engaging in all kinds of excesses, is the chief characteristic of the Christ-mass - and we know God could not be the author of this kind of thing.
7.) That precious name, at which angels veil their faces is mentioned in levity, and with the multitudes there is almost total disregard for Him. They want Christ-mass but they don't want Christ! - R.U.G.
For the believer, it seems to us that one question should settle the whole matter about Christ-mass: Is it of God, or is it of the world?
If it is of God, then we will find it in His Word, and it will be something in which instructed believers rejoice while the world despises. But if it is of the world the world will glory in it and it could not be of the Father. "For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world" (1 John 2:16). And again, "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him." (1 John 2:15).
Regarding the great apostate "Christendom" of today, headed up by Roman Catholicism, there is a potent word in the Lord's message to the church at Thyatira, in Revelation 2:20: "Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols."
Hence we see something of the origin of all our favorite heathen notions. Imagine associating the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ with "Rudolph, the red nosed reindeer," or with a big, fat "Ho-ho" man in a red suit, or our Saviour's death and resurrection with new hats, colored eggs and bunny rabbits! These things did not come to us from God's Word. They came from sheer heathendom. See Jeremiah 10:3-4, about the "Christmas tree."
We do not attempt to reform the world, the unsaved; they will keep right on with this heathen holiday. Our appeal is to believers to take their stand with courage and conviction on God's side in this matter. And every year more of His own blood bought ones are doing so, to God's praise and glory!
We realize, however, that in homes where one spouse is saved and the other unsaved the believing spouse must have grace, patience and understanding. He or she must suffer much that is contrary to the conscience, meanwhile resorting to earnest prayer and casting the problem in the Lord's hands day by day.
